Opposition Leader Joel Ssenyonyi Exposes 400 Million Shillings Service Award for Parliamentary Commissioners

Opposition Leader Joel Ssenyonyi

The Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, has uncovered details of a controversial service award worth 400 million shillings each, recently given to parliamentary commissioners.

According to Ssenyonyi, the award was distributed among the four commissioners of Parliament last week and funneled through the Parliamentary SACCO, which he claims was a tactic to cover up an illegal action.

The beneficiaries of the service award include Mathias Mpuuga, Solomon Silwanyi, Easter Afoyo Chan, and Prossy Akampuliira.

This marks the second time that Parliament’s commissioners have received such an award, with the first one being worth 500 million shillings several years ago.

Ssenyonyi also responded to recent claims that he had received over 600 million shillings as part of a service award.

He strongly denied the rumors, accusing opportunists of spreading misinformation.

He stated that if such money were ever deposited into his account, he would immediately instruct the bank to return it to the sender.

In addition, the LoP has called on the Parliamentary Commission to amend the Emoluments and Benefits Act if they wish to receive service awards legally, rather than resorting to what he describes as the illegal misappropriation of public funds.

Ssenyonyi also expressed frustration with the lack of action from the Inspector General of Government (IGG) office, noting that even after his previous petition to former IGG Betty Kamya, no investigations were ever conducted.

He has vowed not to file another complaint with the IGG, as he believes it would lead to no tangible results.
