Archbishop Ssemogerere Pays Tribute to Late Bishop Charles Martine Wamika, A Shepherd of the Flock

Archbishop of Kampala, His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, has led mourners in honoring the life and legacy of the late Rt. Rev. Bishop Charles Martine Wamika

The Archbishop of Kampala, His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, has led mourners in honoring the life and legacy of the late Rt. Rev. Bishop Charles Martine Wamika, describing him as a devoted shepherd who served his flock with love and dedication since his ordination as a priest on September 22, 1979.

Bishop Wamika, who passed away on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at the age of 72 after battling ill health since 2022, was remembered for his fatherly nature, blending strength with gentleness.

His pastoral journey saw him first appointed as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Tororo in October 1993, before becoming Bishop of Jinja Diocese in March 2010, a role he faithfully served until his death.

Archbishop Ssemogerere recalled a memorable moment from the 2023 Uganda Martyrs Day celebration at Namugongo, where Bishop Wamika spoke of true discipleship.

He emphasized that being a strong Christian means enduring life’s challenges without renouncing God. This powerful message resonated deeply with all who knew him.

The requiem Mass, held at Lubaga Cathedral in Kampala, was led by Archbishop Ssemogerere, who was joined by Rt. Rev. Bishop Lawrence Mukasa of Kasana-Luwero Diocese, Archbishop Raphael Wokorach of Gulu Archdiocese, and other clergy, including Fr. Gerald Muto, the Chancellor of Jinja Diocese.

Together, they honored the late Bishop’s memory and pastoral commitment.

Archbishop Wokorach of Gulu Archdiocese, in his tribute, spoke of Bishop Wamika as a man who radiated warmth and friendliness. “He was a good storyteller, always ready to share a laugh. His love for people, particularly the children, will be fondly remembered,” he said.

The funeral arrangements include several memorial services across Uganda.

Following today’s (Friday) requiem Mass at Lubaga Cathedral, the body of Bishop Wamika will be transported to Nyangole Cathedral in Tororo for a vigil and requiem Mass.

On Saturday, October 25, a service will take place at Budaka Parish, his home parish, followed by a vigil and requiem Mass at St. Gonzaga Minor Seminary in Iganga on Monday, October 27.

Finally, the body will be returned to Jinja Diocese for a vigil and burial on Tuesday, October 28.

Bishop Wamika’s enduring legacy of friendship, love, and service will continue to inspire the people of Jinja Diocese and Uganda as a whole.
