President Yoweri Museveni has reiterated his commitment to prioritizing the economic integration of East Africa, emphasizing the need to build a unified market that benefits wealth creators across the region.
Speaking at Uganda’s 63rd Independence Day celebrations held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, President Museveni underscored that while political integration discussions aiming for a federation of East African states are ongoing, his primary focus remains on economic unity.
He noted that a politically federated East Africa would strategically benefit not only the region but the African continent at large.
Museveni highlighted that East African nations have made significant economic progress, which must now be protected from both internal and external threats.
He stressed the importance of safeguarding these achievements against interference that could undermine regional development.
Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babirye Babalanda, addressed criticisms of the NRM’s manifesto slogan, “Protecting the Gains.”
She pointed out the stark contrast between past regimes and the current government under President Museveni, noting that today, Ugandans enjoy the freedom to criticize the government without fear of reprisal—something previously unheard of.
As part of the Independence Day celebrations, 23 individuals were honored with national medals in recognition of their outstanding service.
Among the recipients was Hajji Mayanja Mohammed, a former Presidential Assistant, who received the Crested Crane Medal.
The family of the late Samari Osmar was awarded the Nalubaale Medal.
Additionally, 21 individuals received the Jubilee Medal, including Uganda Red Cross Secretary General Robert Kwesiga, Bishop Simon Peter Owulira, Dr. Otim Maxwell Enap, and Dr. Byanyima Kusaba, among others.
This year’s celebrations, held under the theme “63 Years of Independence: A Reason to Double Our Efforts in Sustaining a United and Progressive Nation”, reflected on Uganda’s journey since gaining independence on 9th October 1962 and renewed calls for national unity and progress.
