Government, Teachers’ Union Yet to Resolve Prolonged Strike; Minister Appeals for Reconsideration

Minister for Public Service, Muruli Mukasa

The government has yet to reach an agreement with teachers under the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU), who have been on strike since last month over unmet government promises.

Minister for Public Service, Muruli Mukasa, informed Parliament that the striking teachers have declined calls to end the strike and resume teaching duties.

He made these remarks while appearing before the joint Parliamentary Committee on Public Service and Local Government, and the Gender, Labour and Social Development Committee.

Although Mukasa was summoned primarily to present views on the Human Resource Management Professionals Bill, lawmakers also sought his comments on the ongoing teachers’ strike.

The Minister cautioned that the continued strike risks severely disrupting students’ education, especially during this critical school term.

Mukasa urged the teachers to reconsider their stance, highlighting that the government has already invested 20 billion shillings into the Teachers’ SACCO to improve their welfare.

He also reminded them of a government proposal to sponsor the education of up to four children per teacher, free of charge.
