The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has voiced concern over the ongoing strike by Arts teachers and called on the government and relevant stakeholders to urgently address their grievances.
Speaking to journalists at the party headquarters today, UPC spokesperson Sharon Oyat Arach criticized the government’s selective approach to teachers’ salary enhancements, warning that it continues to harm the education sector.
Arach recalled that three years ago, UPC President Jimmy James Akena had cautioned the government on the floor of Parliament about the risks of implementing a discriminatory salary policy for teachers based on subject specialization, a warning that has now materialized.
“The current strike is a direct result of the government’s failure to implement an inclusive and equitable salary structure for all teachers,” Arach stated.
She reiterated the party’s position that all educators, regardless of their teaching specialization, deserve fair and equal treatment in matters of remuneration.
The strike, which has disrupted learning in several schools, reflects growing frustration among Arts teachers who feel marginalized under the current pay structure that favors Science teachers.
