The Deputy Spokesperson of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, who is currently on remand at Luzira Prison, has been vetted for the Nakawa East parliamentary seat.
Mufumbiro is facing charges of conspiracy to commit a felony, with the prosecution alleging that he and others were involved in unlawful drilling, contrary to Section 48 of the amended Penal Code Act.
Despite being incarcerated, the party went ahead with the vetting process from Luzira, as Mufumbiro had been arrested before the official vetting exercise began.
Sources from the NUP headquarters in Makerere-Kavule confirmed that he had appointed his twin brother, Kato Kenneth, to lead grassroots mobilization and oversee all campaign-related activities in Nakawa East.
Speaking to the media, Mufumbiro’s lawyer, Jonathan Elotu, confirmed that the vetting process had been completed successfully from prison.
He noted that while his client was in stable physical condition, he was dissatisfied with the government’s decision to hold him in Luzira Upper Prison, a facility typically reserved for capital offenders.
Elotu indicated that they were now awaiting feedback from the party’s Elections Management Committee (EMC) regarding Mufumbiro’s candidature.
EMC chairperson Harriet Chemutai said the committee would review Mufumbiro’s documents and compare them with those of other aspiring candidates before making a final decision.
She emphasized that all individuals undergoing the vetting process should remain prepared for any outcome, as the committee’s objective is to select the most suitable flag bearers for each constituency.
The ongoing vetting exercise, which began earlier this week, is progressing through various regions, with candidates from Greater Masaka, Lango, and Tooro having already been assessed.
Additional regions will be covered in the coming days as the committee continues its nationwide selection process.
