The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has issued a strong warning against voter bribery and other forms of electoral malpractice ahead of the Youth and Entrepreneur League elections scheduled for Thursday, 18th September.
The elections will take place across all 151 NRM districts.
Fred Jachan Omach, the Deputy Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, confirmed the development, expressing concern over the growing tendency of candidates to engage in illegal activities that contravene the commission’s guidelines.
He cited common violations such as the procurement of ineligible voters, obstruction of election officials, and interference with the voting process.
Omach emphasized that the Commission would not tolerate any form of misconduct and that strict measures are in place to ensure a free and fair election.
The elections on Thursday will see the selection of leadership for the NRM National Youth League, covering key positions including the Chairperson, regional vice chairpersons, General Secretary, Secretary for Publicity, and Secretary for Finance.
At the same time, five party flag bearers will be chosen to represent the youth at parliamentary level in the Northern, Eastern, Western, and Central regions, along with a national youth female representative.
Omach also addressed the recent nullification of Tanga Collins’ victory by the NRM tribunal.
The decision followed reports of electoral irregularities and violence during the party’s delegates’ conference.
As a result, several positions that were not voted on during that event will now be filled in the upcoming elections.
He further confirmed that voting will also take place for the remaining nine positions in the NRM Entrepreneur League, which had not been filled previously.
These include regional vice chairpersons and various secretarial roles within the league’s structure.
In a related development, Hassan Basajjabalaba has been declared unopposed for the position of Chairperson of the Entrepreneur League.
This outcome followed high-level negotiations at State House led by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the party chairman, who brokered consensus among the contenders, including Phillip Kakuru and King Ceaser Mulenga.
The Electoral Commission has reiterated its commitment to conducting transparent and peaceful elections and has called upon all candidates and their supporters to adhere strictly to the established rules and guidelines.
