Kampala Archdiocese, through its Justice and Peace Department, has launched the Peace Month initiative aimed at praying for peace and raising awareness about the importance of reconciliation and harmonious living within families, society, and the country at large.
September is globally recognized as a month dedicated to peace, largely due to the United Nations International Day of Peace observed on September 21st, a day that promotes peace and non-violence around the world.
The launch was officiated by the Archbishop of Kampala, His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, who was represented by the Vicar General, Msgr. Rogers Mukasa Kabuye.
The event began with a community cleaning exercise at Namirembe Bbakuli Market and was followed by a Eucharistic Prayer at Old Kampala Parish.
This year’s Peace Month is being observed under the theme “Forgive Us Our Trespasses; Grant Us Peace.” In his remarks, Msgr. Kabuye called upon all people to be agents of peace and justice in their communities.
Fr. Emmanuel Ssekitange, Director of the Justice and Peace Department, noted that peace can be achieved through many avenues, including caring for the vulnerable and promoting fairness in all aspects of life.
Regina Nakkazi Bakitte, Head of the Justice and Peace Laity, also attended the event and raised concerns about persistent injustices in the country, especially in the political sphere, which continue to fuel conflict and unrest.
Throughout the month of September, the Justice and Peace Department under the Caritas Commission of Kampala Archdiocese has organized a series of activities to engage the public in promoting peace.
Among these are a peace run at Rubaga Playgrounds, a special prayer for refugees and victims of human trafficking at Nsambya Youth Sharing Centre, the Benedicto Kiwanuka Memorial Lecture at Pope Paul Hotel in Ndeeba, and a closing event at St. Joseph’s Parish in Mpigi, Mitalamaria Vicariate, dedicated to gathering, sharing, and praying for peace.
Through these efforts, the Archdiocese aims to encourage unity, forgiveness, and a renewed commitment to justice and peaceful coexistence across Uganda.
