Aspiring Lord Mayor and Nakawa East Member of Parliament, Eng. Ronald Balimwezo, has threatened to seek a court injunction to stop ongoing works on the Nakivubo Channel.
This follows what he describes as an unlawful and forceful takeover of the public drainage facility by city businessman Hamis Kiggundu.
Kiggundu, widely known as Ham, recently fenced off sections of the channel for development purposes.
However, Balimwezo claims the move was made without approved development plans or clearance from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA)’s political leadership.
The legislator expressed concern over what he termed as an illegal encroachment on public infrastructure by a private individual for personal gain.
He stated that there is no formal documentation to prove that the giveaway of the Nakivubo Channel was ever sanctioned by the KCCA Council.
Balimwezo revealed that he is in the process of writing to KCCA to officially request access to council minutes that reportedly rejected the channel’s transfer to Kiggundu.
He said this information will help him assess the legal standing of the case and determine the next steps, including petitioning court for an injunction against the development.
Despite his opposition to the current process, Balimwezo reaffirmed his support for the redevelopment and modernization of the channel.
He emphasized, however, that any such project must follow due process and prioritizes public interest.
