NUP Lawyers Condemn Re-Arrest of Party Members Outside Masaka Court

NUP LAWYERS

Lawyers representing the Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) have condemned what they describe as a blatant disregard for the rule of law following the dramatic re-arrest of two of their members shortly after a court session at Masaka High Court.

Edward Ssebufu, commonly known as Eddie Mutwe, and Achilleo Kivumbi were apprehended by heavily armed security personnel within the court premises and subsequently transported to Kawempe, where they were charged with fresh offenses.

NUP lawyers have decried the move as an abuse of court processes and a violation of the defendants’ rights.

The new charges, brought before the Kawempe Magistrate’s Court, relate to alleged military activities at the NUP party headquarters.

Earlier that day, the Masaka High Court had scheduled Friday, August 22, 2025, to deliver a ruling on bail applications for four accused individuals Eddie Mutwe, Achilleo Kivumbi, Grace Wakabi (also known as Smart wa Bobi), and Mugumya Gaddafi (popularly known as General Gadaffi).

The group faces charges including aggravated robbery and four counts of simple robbery, alleged to have occurred on May 18, 2024, during a burial ceremony in Manja Village, Lwengo District.

Speaking to the press, NUP lawyer Samuel Muyizi expressed outrage at the re-arrest, stating that such actions undermine the justice system and reflect poorly on those in positions of authority.

He confirmed that the legal team is preparing to file a fresh bail application for the two members on the new charges.
