Uganda Airlines Posts Shs237.9 Billion Loss, Citing High Fuel Costs and Aircraft Depreciation

Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Airlines, Jenifer Bamuturaki

The Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Airlines, Jenifer Bamuturaki, has shocked Members of Parliament on the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities, and State Enterprises (COSASE) after revealing that the airline recorded a loss of Shs 237.855 billion in the 2023/2024 financial year.

Bamuturaki made the disclosure while appearing before the COSASE committee, chaired by Busiro East MP Medard Lubega Ssegona, during the scrutiny of the Auditor General’s report for the period under review.

She attributed the massive loss to high fuel costs, increased crew allowances, and aircraft depreciation.

Committee members pressed Bamuturaki to explain what measures the airline is implementing to reduce losses and improve its financial performance.

In response, she said the airline is actively working to manage operational costs by renegotiating existing contracts and ensuring that all new contracts are carefully reviewed to guarantee cost-effectiveness.

Chairperson Ssegona further demanded that Bamuturaki disclose the companies supplying Uganda Airlines with fuel and spare parts.

Bamuturaki responded that several suppliers, particularly those dealing in spare parts, are based in the United States.
