Airtel Uganda has entered into a groundbreaking partnership with the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to facilitate tax collection through its mobile money platform, Airtel Money.
The collaboration is expected to significantly improve the ease and efficiency of tax payments across the country.
Speaking at the announcement, Japheth Aritho, Managing Director of Airtel Money, expressed optimism about the partnership, noting that it would empower the government to collect revenue from even the most remote areas.
“With over 35,000 Airtel Money agents spread across Uganda, taxpayers can now conveniently pay their taxes using their mobile phones. This will greatly enhance access and compliance,” Aritho said.
The partnership represents a major step forward in URA’s mission to modernize tax administration and improve public service delivery.
By leveraging the reach and simplicity of mobile money, the URA aims to increase voluntary tax payments, reduce default rates, and promote financial inclusion.
James Adongo, URA’s Assistant Commissioner for Enterprise Architecture, welcomed the move, stating that it aligns with the authority’s strategic goal of enhancing the taxpayer experience and closing the tax gap.
“This partnership will boost compliance, expand our revenue base, and ultimately contribute to Uganda’s economic growth,” Adongo noted.
The new system is expected to benefit individuals, small business owners, and enterprises by offering a secure, fast, and accessible method for tax transactions.
