Traffic diversions announced ahead of CHAN 2024 tournament

Traffic Police Spokesperson Michael Kananura

As Uganda prepares to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) from August 2 to 29, 2025, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has announced a temporary traffic management plan aimed at easing movement in Kampala, Entebbe, and surrounding areas during the tournament.

The plan will affect key routes, including the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, Northern Bypass, Kubbiri Roundabout, Kalerwe Interchange, and Busega Roundabout—areas that link to stadiums, hotels, and training facilities.

According to Traffic Police Spokesperson Michael Kananura, traffic diversions will be enforced on match days starting at 12 p.m. Trucks and private vehicles will be redirected via alternative routes, including Kalerwe, Gayaza, Mukono, Kyaliwajjala, Sonde, and Seeta.

Specific areas like the Kireka-Nasanga Junction will be restricted to pedestrian access only, and parking near stadiums will be limited strictly to vehicles with official VIP accreditation.

“We strongly advise the public not to drive to the stadiums and instead use alternative transport options. Planning your journey in advance will help reduce congestion,” Kananura said.

Police will escort national teams and VIP dignitaries, and officers will be stationed along major roads to manage traffic flow and ensure public safety.

Kananura emphasized that cooperation from all road users is essential for the smooth operation of the tournament, which will bring thousands of fans and officials to Uganda.
