Nation bids farewell to retired Supreme Court Justice Prof. George Kanyeihamba

Dignitaries, members of the legal fraternity, and mourners from all walks of life gathered on Monday at All Saints Cathedral, Nakasero, to pay their last respects to the late retired Supreme Court Justice, Professor George William Kanyeihamba.

Among the notable attendees were Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, and Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Hajjati Minsa Kabanda.

President Yoweri Museveni was represented by Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Minister for ICT and National Guidance, who delivered the President’s tribute.

The funeral service was led by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu.

In his sermon, the Archbishop praised Prof. Kanyeihamba for his unwavering dedication to justice, integrity, and his deep commitment to both God and country.

Since July 22, a memorial book had been opened at the Supreme Court, allowing members of the public and legal community to honor Justice Kanyeihamba’s legacy.

Justice Kanyeihamba served on the Supreme Court from 1997 until his retirement in 2009.

Prior to that, he held several key cabinet positions including Minister of Commerce, Minister of Justice, and Attorney General.

In his later years, he became an outspoken critic of the government, especially on constitutional matters, earning both admiration and controversy for his bold stance.

Born on August 11, 1939, Prof. Kanyeihamba passed away on July 14, 2025, at the age of 85.

Following the service at All Saints Cathedral, his body was taken for a vigil at Kabojja International School.

Burial is scheduled for Tuesday, July 29, at his residence in Buziga, Makindye Division. The burial service will begin at 10 a.m.

Justice Kanyeihamba leaves behind a lasting legacy as a legal scholar, public servant, and fearless advocate for constitutionalism in Uganda.
