Viral video of school director flogging man sparks national outcry, legal action underway

James Odongo, the Director of King James Comprehensive School of Nursing, violently flogging a man

A disturbing video showing James Odongo, the Director of King James Comprehensive School of Nursing, violently flogging a man has triggered national outrage and renewed debate over abuse and unchecked authority in Uganda’s private educational institutions.

The incident which reportedly took place in February 2025, surfaced on social media this week, drawing widespread condemnation from the public, civil society, and legal professionals.

In a statement released on Monday, the Uganda Law Society (ULS) confirmed the timing of the assault and noted that its Rule of Law Department has been actively engaging relevant government bodies to ensure accountability.

The statement, signed by ULS Vice President Anthony Asiimwe, emphasized that initial attempts to settle the matter privately had failed, prompting legal proceedings.

Asiimwe said the Rule of Law Department has taken keen interest in this case and is closely working with authorities to ensure justice is served.

The Uganda Police have since opened a case file, and the Lira Regional Criminal Investigations Department is reviewing potential assault charges against Odongo.

Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed that the video is being treated with urgency, and an arrest is expected soon.

The incident has reignited concerns about disciplinary measures and abuse of power in private schools, with several advocacy groups calling for stronger regulatory oversight and protection mechanisms for students and staff.

As investigations proceed, education stakeholders and the public continue to demand accountability and systemic reforms to prevent similar abuses in the future.
