Court grants bail to NUP’s Noah Mutwe after over two months in detention

Court grants bail to NUP’s Noah Mutwe

The Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to Noah Mitala, also known as Noah Mutwe, one of the bodyguards of Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi.

Presiding Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizi ordered Mutwe’s release on a cash bail of Shs 5 million, while each of his sureties was bonded at Shs 50 million non-cash.

As part of his bail conditions, Mutwe has been prohibited from leaving the country without prior court approval.

This marks Mutwe’s second attempt at securing bail following his arrest on May 15th, 2025, from his home in Gombe, Wakiso District, by gunmen believed to be security operatives.

He was held incommunicado until May 22nd, when he was produced before Buganda Road Court alongside Charles Twine, the former spokesperson of the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID).

The duo faces eight charges, including allegations of attacking President Yoweri Museveni and his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Chief Magistrate Kayizi noted that the accused had been in custody for more than 67 days without trial, which warranted his release on bail. The case was adjourned to August 25th, 2025.

Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi, who was present in court, criticized the bail terms, describing them as excessive.

He argued that justice should not come at the cost of targeting innocent Ugandans for political reasons.
