Four UYD members arrested for attempting to force entry into Electoral Commission offices

Four members of the Democratic Party’s (DP) Young Democrats were arrested in Kampala after attempting to force their way into the Electoral Commission offices.

The group, which included Anthony Wadimba (35) from Kayunga, Julius Dumba (32) from Kawala, Ismail Kirya (33) from Kawala, and Micheal Mpunge (29) from Entebbe, was seeking to meet with Electoral Commission Chairman Justice Simon Byabakama.

According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, the group was demanding a meeting to discuss the legitimacy of DP Chairman Norbert Mao’s leadership, which they claimed was marred by alleged irregularities during the party’s recent delegate conference in Mbarara.

They insisted that Mao’s leadership was illegitimate, raising tensions within the party.

Onyango revealed that when the group was advised to schedule an appointment to discuss their concerns, they became violentand attempted to force their way into the offices, prompting the police to intervene.

They were subsequently arrested and charged with common nuisance.

The four suspects are currently being held at Kabalagala Police Stationas investigations continue.

The incident highlights growing divisions within the Democratic Party, as tensions around leadership and internal party matters continue to simmer.
