Legal fraternity pays tribute to the Late Justice Kanyeihamba at Supreme Court

More than 33 members of the legal fraternity, including judges, lawyers, and legal scholars, have so far visited the Supreme Court to sign a memorial book in honour of the late retired Supreme Court Judge, Professor George William Kanyeihamba.

Among the distinguished visitors who paid their respects were former Deputy Chief Justice Richard Buteera, Acting Principal Judge Jane Okuo Kajuga, Senior Counsel Martha Karua from Kenya, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, and Paul Austin Buule of ATNA Advocates, among others.

Their presence and tributes mark a solemn recognition of the extraordinary impact Justice Kanyeihamba had on Uganda’s legal landscape.

The memorial book, steadily filling with messages of remembrance and reflection, stands as a silent testament to the profound respect and admiration for a man many have described as a giant in jurisprudence and a relentless defender of constitutionalism.

Professor Kanyeihamba served on the Supreme Court bench from 1997 until his retirement in November 2009.

Prior to his judicial career, he held several ministerial positions, including Minister of Commerce, Minister of Justice, and Attorney General.

In his later years, he became one of the most outspoken critics of President Yoweri Museveni’s government, particularly on issues relating to constitutional governance and the rule of law.

Professor Kanyeihamba passed away on 14th July 2025, at the age of 85.

He was born on 11th August 1939. Preparations for his burial are underway, with the ceremony expected to take place later this week.

As Uganda mourns one of its most revered legal minds, the outpouring of respect at the Supreme Court serves as a powerful reminder of the legacy Professor Kanyeihamba leaves behind—one defined by courage, integrity, and an unyielding commitment to justice.
