Chaos and protests rock NRM primaries in Kampala and Wakiso

Tensions flared at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) headquarters in Kyadondo as hundreds of supporters stormed the premises, protesting alleged vote rigging in the Kampala District Woman Member of Parliament (MP) primaries.

Supporters of former Kampala Resident City Commissioner Aminah Lukanga Nanziri and her rival Shamim Nanfuma accused each other of manipulating results.

The standoff has intensified due to the Electoral Commission’s delay in declaring an overall winner, despite the announcement of results from Kampala’s five divisions on Thursday.

Supporters of Shamim Nanfuma claimed that vote tallies were being altered overnight, raising concerns about transparency and fairness in the process.

They warned that any attempt to announce new figures would be rejected unless verified with original polling data.

In Wakiso District, the situation was similarly chaotic after the registrar of Kasanje Sub-County reportedly vanished with key election results.

This development has stalled the announcement of the NRM flag bearers for the Busiro South and Wakiso District Woman MP races, further inflaming tensions in the region.

Shaban Kawooya, the NRM Returning Officer for Wakiso, confirmed that the tallying process remains incomplete.

Out of 30 villages in Kasanje Sub-County, only declaration forms from six villages have been received, rendering the outcome inconclusive.

Elsewhere in Wakiso District, several constituencies have successfully concluded their primaries. In Nansana Municipality, Idi Buggaga Matovu emerged victorious with 18,350 votes.

Philip Mulindwa secured the Makindye Ssabagabo flag with 11,676 votes.

In Kira Municipality, Daniel Kananula won decisively with 19,084 votes, accounting for 94.82 percent of the tally. Abdul Kiyimba took the Busiro East flag with 30,810 votes.

In Busiro North, Mayanja Matovu ran unopposed, while in Entebbe Municipality, Shyaka Bashaija clinched victory with 4,175 votes.

The NRM now faces growing pressure to resolve disputes swiftly and restore confidence in the party’s internal election processes ahead of the 2026 general elections.
