The opposition Revolutionary People’s Party (RPP) has taken legal action against the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), accusing the pressure group of unlawfully using the lion symbol, which RPP claims as its official emblem.
Addressing the press in Mengo, RPP President Charles Mutaasa Kafeero stated that the party is fully registered under Ugandan law and has long used the lion as one of its official symbols.
He expressed concern that PLU’s adoption of the same symbol has caused confusion among RPP members and supporters.
RPP is now demanding that Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the patron of PLU, publicly denounce the use of the lion symbol and adopt an alternative.
The party has filed a case in court, giving PLU a 14-day ultimatumto cease using the symbol or face further legal and political action.
Kafeero emphasized that RPP is preparing to field candidates at all levels in the 2026 general elections, and the exclusive use of the lion symbol is essential to avoid misleading voters.
He further announced that the party has completed its internal nomination process and is awaiting the Independent Electoral Commission to release the official national nomination schedule.
The case marks a significant escalation in tensions between political actors and emerging pressure groups ahead of Uganda’s high-stakes 2026 elections.
