The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries for constituency and district Woman MP Flag bearers have concluded, with party returning officers now compiling the results to determine the official candidates for the 2026 general elections.
While the primaries were rolled out nationwide, the process was marred by logistical setbacks, low voter turnout, and allegations of electoral malpractice.
Reports from various districts painted a mixed picture, with some areas showing voter enthusiasm, while others struggled with administrative hiccups and claims of interference.
In several constituencies, voters and party officials reported absent polling agents, disputed voter registers, and delays in the voting process.
Although unconfirmed, some claims pointed to alleged sabotage by opposition members, particularly from the National Unity Platform (NUP).
In Nansana Municipality, turnout was sluggish in the early hours, with only a few voters arriving by 9:00 AM despite polling stations being operational.
Meanwhile, in Nakawa West, tensions flared as some voters accused NUP members of attempting to interfere with the ruling party’s internal process.
Supporters of Margaret Zziwa Nantongo, the former Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), alleged that local defense operatives, led by a man identified as Ben Rosiko, were NUP sympathizers influencing the election at Kalinabiri One polling stationin Kigowa.
They also accused Herbert Anderson Buroraof orchestrating confusion in the area claims which remain unverified.
Despite these challenges, the NRM’s internal selection process has moved forward, with final tallies expected in the coming days as the party prepares for the 2026 general elections.
