A tragic accident during the NRM party primaries in Soroti District has left one person dead and several others injured, raising fresh concerns about crowd safety and campaign vehicle management during political events.
The incident occurred in Kamuda Sub County, where supporters had gathered to receive cash handouts from the campaign team of Patrick Aeku, an NRM aspirant vying for the Soroti County MP seat.
According to eyewitness Paul Eupa, the campaign vehicle overturned while moving through a crowd, resulting in a fatality.
One individual reportedly fell from the moving vehicle and was run over by its tires, dying instantly.
Benard Eweru, chairman of Aeku’s campaign team, confirmed the incident and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
Soroti District Police Commander (DPC) Moses Olang identified the victim as Samuel Okello.
He said police had retrieved the bodyfrom the scene and would conduct a postmortem examination.
The incident has cast a spotlight on safety standards during political campaigns, with growing concerns over how candidates and their teams manage large gatherings, vehicle movement, and crowd control in high-energy environments.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether charges will be filed, but the accident adds to the mounting calls for stricter regulation of campaign activities, particularly those involving transportation and public giveaways.
