The Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) has given the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) a seven-day ultimatum to expedite the hearing of Democratic Party (DP) petitions related to the disputed delegates’ conference held in Mbarara.
At a press conference in Kampala, Ismail Kirya, the former president of UYD, stated that if the IEC fails to act within the set timeframe, they will consider taking further action.
Kirya highlighted that the IEC has received over 10 petitions from concerned DP leaders, urging its intervention as the regulatory body for political parties.
However, he claimed that the IEC has neglected to address the issue.
He also called out the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Norbert Mao, for allegedly pressuring the IEC Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, to dismiss the DP petitions without a fair hearing.
Kirya appealed to all UYD members who still want to see DP thrive to unite in the fight for justice within the party.
