The Uganda Police Force has arrested 16 individuals linked to a series of election-related violent incidents during the ongoing NRM party primaries in various districts.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the police confirmed reports of physical assaults, property destruction, and vandalism of election materials in Mubende, Isingiro, and Rubanda districts.

In Mubende, on July 7, violence erupted at Kyapa Kyeturege Trading Centre between supporters of NRM candidates Muhumuza Henry and Hon. Kabanda David.

The altercation escalated, with gunfire exchanged, injuring one person, Gumisiriza Roger, while others were assaulted with sticks and bricks.

The violence spread to Nabingola Sub-county headquarters, where two vehicles registration numbers UBP 452K (Toyota Noah) and UBP 788T (Toyota Wish) along with a motorcycle (UFU 345X, Bajaj Boxer) were set on fire.

Mubende police responded quickly, contained the situation, and transported the injured to Mubende Regional Hospital.

Three suspects have been arrested, and investigations are ongoing.

In Isingiro District, another incident took place on July 5 at Kyempisi Cell, Kikagate Sub-county, where two motorcycles and a vehicle were torched.

Ten suspects have been arrested, though others remain at large.

On July 7, a security meeting was convened with stakeholders and NRM electoral officials to discuss measures to de-escalate tensions.

In Rubanda District, on July 3, supporters of Minister Henry Musasizi were attacked at Hakashanje Playground in Hamuhambo Town Council.

The minister’s convoy was pelted with stones, resulting in damage to several vehicles.
