Police Spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma

Police have arrested around 30 individuals in connection with a series of robberies and assaults that occurred on Saturday afternoon, during the high-profile event where President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni collected his nomination forms from the NRM Electoral Commission offices on Kyadondo Road in Kampala.

The violent incidents reportedly unfolded near the National Theatreand UBC roundabout, targeting people who were heading to witness the President’s nomination.

Victims included motorists, pedestrians, and business owners. Witnesses say the attackers, many of whom wore yellow T-shirts, took advantage of the crowds to commit theft and assault.

Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke confirmed the arrests, noting that the suspects were identified through CCTV footage and apprehended at different locations across the city.

They are currently being held at various police stations, including CPS Kampala and Wandegeya Police Station.

Kituuma said that statements from victims are still being recorded as investigations continue.

In a related but separate incident, Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyireaddressed the case of Sophia Nakiwolo, a mobile money operator who was robbed and fatally stabbed on Nkrumah Road on Saturday evening.

Owoyesigyire clarified that this incident is not connected to the earlier robberies involving the yellow T-shirt-wearing groups.

Nakiwolo’s murder, which shocked the local community, is under active investigation, with police pursuing leads to identify the attackers.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior, especially during politically sensitive periods.

Police say additional security measures will be taken in the coming weeks to prevent further violence.
