FDC condemns election-day violence, warns of return to dark history

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has expressed serious concern over what it describes as a resurgence of politically motivated violence, reminiscent of Uganda’s troubled election history.

Addressing the media at the party’s headquarters in Najjanankumbi, FDC Deputy Secretary for Publicity, Walid Mulindwa Lubega, condemned the violent acts reportedly perpetrated by a group of National Resistance Movement (NRM) youth supporters during the weekend nomination of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at the party’s Kyadondo Road offices in Kampala.

Mulindwa accused the group, allegedly led by Christopher Ddamulira, of harassing citizens, attacking bystanders, and robbing roadside vendors.

He warned that such actions mirror the violent tactics used in previous elections, notably the 2001 polls during the Kalangala Action Plan led by Maj. Ronald Kakooza Mutale, and other violent groups like the notorious Boda-Boda 2010, led by Abdallah Kitata in 2006.

Mulindwa said these actions take the country back to the dark days of political intimidation and violence, adding that the party strongly condemns such behavior and calls for immediate action to prevent escalation as Uganda approaches another election cycle.

In a related development, the FDC has announced a temporary suspension of its internal flag bearer campaigns to mourn the passing of the sister of one of its presidential aspirants, Patrick Amuriat Oboi.

FDC Electoral Commission Chairperson, Boniface Toterebuka Bamwenda, stated that the campaigns, which had been progressing smoothly, will be paused in solidarity.

Presidential aspirants, including Amuriat and Nathan Nandala Mafabi, have agreed to the suspension.

The FDC internal elections are scheduled for 31st July 2025, during the party’s Delegates Conference, with primaries set for 2nd July 2025, following the successful nomination of candidates.
