Police shortlists 11,000 recruits for training ahead of 2026 general elections

Police Spokesperson, ACP Kituuma Rusoke

The Uganda Police Force has shortlisted a total of 11,896 candidates for training as Probation Police Constables (PPCs), as part of its wider effort to strengthen security in the run-up to the 2026 general elections.

The successful recruits were selected from an initial pool of 41,378 applicants, following a thorough vetting process.

While 17,174 candidates had been initially shortlisted, only those who met all the requirements advanced to the final training list.

The recruits will undergo intensive training beginning 7th July 2025 at three designated Police Training Schools: Kabalye in Masindi District, Ikafe in Yumbe District in Northern Uganda, and Oririm in Katakwi District, located in the Teso Sub-region.

Police Spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke confirmed that the district-specific lists of successful candidates have already been pinned up to notify the selected individuals of their assigned training centers.

Despite the progress, the recruitment process has not been without controversy.

Police officials have sounded a warning over the submission of fake academic documents by some applicants.

ACP Kituuma noted that any individual found guilty of forgery will face immediate disqualification and could be prosecuted.

To support this large-scale recruitment and the broader operational needs of the force ahead of the elections, the Uganda Police in May 2025 requested UGX 157 billion in the 2025/2026 national budget.

The funding will facilitate the training, deployment, and logistical support for the new recruits, with the aim of ensuring a peaceful and secure electoral process.
