Kylian Mbappé accuses PSG of moral harassment over unpaid wages and treatment

Kylian Mbappé has filed a legal complaint accusing Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) of moral harassment, the Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed on Thursday.

The Real Madrid star is seeking €55 million ($61 million) in unpaid wages, further fueling the ongoing rift between him and his former club.

Mbappé claims that PSG subjected him to “lofting,” a practice in French football where players are isolated or excluded from the main squad for sporting, administrative, or disciplinary reasons.

He argues that this treatment began after he chose not to extend his contract with the Ligue 1 giants before the 2023-24 season.

The prosecutor’s office confirmed that Mbappé is denouncing the “lofting” he allegedly endured at PSG, which he believes was a form of moral harassment.

The incident occurred after Mbappé informed PSG that he would not be extending his contract, which was set to expire in 2024, sparking tensions between the player and the club.

Mbappé’s departure from PSG in the summer of 2023 came after seven years, during which he scored a club-record 256 goals.

His time at the club ended amid a backdrop of discord, with some fans booing him during his last home game at Parc des Princes.

PSG had made significant efforts to retain Mbappé, offering him the most lucrative contract in club history in 2022.

However, despite the hefty offer, Mbappé felt frustrated by the club’s failure to fulfill promises regarding new signings. His frustration was exacerbated by the contract’s structure, which he believed lacked clarity, given that it was only a one-year extension with an option for an additional season.

In June 2023, Mbappé stunned PSG by announcing that he would not be activating the option for a second year.

This left PSG in a difficult position, needing to sell the player to avoid losing him for nothing once his contract expired.

Amid this standoff, Mbappé was excluded from the preseason squad for a tour of Japan and South Korea and was forced to train separately from the first-team squad.

PSG’s management initially considered selling him but eventually turned down a €300 million ($351.4 million) offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal.

Mbappé returned to the PSG lineup after a period of negotiations and tensions with the club.

In April 2024, Mbappé’s legal team announced it would take action against PSG for harassment, citing the treatment he received during this tumultuous period.
