The Catholic Church in Uganda has on Wednesday marked 146 years since the first Eucharistic celebration in the country, held at St. John the Baptist Mapeera Nabulagala Catholic Parish.
The first Holy Sacrifice of the Mass took place on 25th June 1879, led by Msgr. Leon Livinhac, who would later become a Bishop and subsequently an Archbishop.
During today’s commemorative Mass, which was presided over by Msgr. Gerald Kalumba, the Second Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Kampala, the faithful reflected on this year’s theme: “Eucharist: The Food of Pilgrims of Hope.”
In his homily, Msgr. Kalumba emphasized the importance of living a life rooted in hope, drawing strength from the Eucharist.
He warned that without the Holy Eucharist, Christian life is at risk, urging the faithful to regularly receive the sacrament which fosters peace in families and communities.
In a highlight of the celebration, 264 children received their First Holy Communion during this historic Mass.
