High Court grants Lawyer Kiiza permission to retrieve passport for medical treatment

High Court in Kampala has authorized lawyer Eron Kiiza to retrieve his passport

The High Court in Kampala has authorized lawyer Eron Kiiza to retrieve his passport in order to travel abroad for medical treatment.

Presiding over the matter on Wednesday, Criminal Division Judge David Matovu ruled that Kiiza does not pose a flight risk.

The judge noted that Kiiza had previously traveled to Kenya using a temporary travel document and returned to Uganda voluntarily, showing compliance with court processes.

Justice Matovu explained that the earlier condition requiring Kiiza to deposit his passport with the court, as set by Justice Michael Elubu, was not intended as a punitive measure.

Instead, it was a standard bail condition designed to ensure accountability.

The court also determined that the other bail conditions including cash bail and sureties were sufficient to guarantee Kiiza’s return to continue with his appeal proceedings.

Upon completion of his treatment abroad, Kiiza is required to redeposit his passport with the High Court.

Kiiza, who has not disclosed the medical facility he intends to visit, formally petitioned the court for the release of his passport. The document had been retained after his release from Kitalya Prison, where he was detained for nearly three months following an order from the now-defunct General Court Martial.

He was sentenced to nine months in prison on 7th January 2025.
