Lubaga Hospital hosts surgical camp, expands support for underprivileged patients

Lubaga Hospital hosts surgical camp

Uganda Martyrs Hospital Lubaga has launched a surgical camp aimed at providing affordable medical care to patients in need of minor to intermediate surgical procedures.

The camp is expected to benefit at least 100 patients, following a successful screening of over 1,400 individuals.

Dr. Julius Luyimbazi, the hospital’s Executive Director, confirmed that more than 100 patients have been identified as requiring surgery, and 85 of them have already paid the subsidized fees to undergo their procedures.

The surgical camp targets conditions requiring short hospital stays typically less than three days including prostate issues, gynecological conditions, orthopedic cases, and hernias.

Dr. Luyimbazi emphasized that the hospital is offering the surgeries at reduced costs to increase access for vulnerable patients.

In support of the initiative, the hospital’s Board Chairperson, Prof. Patrick Kyamanywa, highlighted the availability of a Poor Patients Fund worth Shs 200 million, which has been set aside to cater for underprivileged individuals who may not afford even the subsidized rates.

Meanwhile, Prof. Kyamanywa also announced that Uganda Martyrs Hospital Lubaga is on track to acquire a new CT scan machine a critical upgrade for the facility.

The acquisition follows a Shs 2.2 billion fundraising campaign launched last October during the hospital’s 125th anniversary celebrations.

The campaign aims to purchase a 64-slice CT scan machine, and the hospital has so far raised 75% of the target amount.

Dr. Luyimbazi added that the hospital continues to serve a large and growing patient population.

In the last financial year alone, Lubaga Hospital managed over 20,000 outpatient visits, admitted approximately 950 inpatients monthly, recorded 3,500 deliveries, and conducted more than 5,100 surgeries, both major and minor.

The surgical camp and the ongoing CT scan fundraising campaign reflect Lubaga Hospital’s continued commitment to delivering quality healthcare services while expanding support for patients who may not have the means to afford specialized medical care.
