The Woman Member of Parliament for Ssembabule District, Mary Begumisa Mugisha, has urged National Resistance Movement (NRM) members to remain calm and united as the party prepares to hold fresh primaries for the Ssembabule District Chairperson position.
The call comes in the wake of a failed election attempt on May 23, 2025, which was marred by chaos and violence.
The disruption stemmed from tensions between rival camps led by Retired Gen. Emmanuel Rwashande and MP Theodore Ssekikubo, who accused each other of instigating the unrest.
Efforts to reach a consensus on the election process between the two factions collapsed, resulting in the suspension of the vote.
While some candidates were declared unopposed for key positions on the Ssembabule District NRM mainstream committee including Vice Chairperson Sodo Kaguta Aine, General Secretary Mary Begumisa Mugisha, Treasurer Shatsi Musherure, and Publicity Secretary Denis Ddumba the position of District Chairperson remains contested.
The race for Chairperson is still open, with Mawogola West MP Hanifah Kawooya facing competition from Phinehas Katirima.
NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi has pledged to announce a new election date.
He emphasized the importance of ensuring a clean voters’ register, eliminating military interference, and promoting disciplined conduct among candidates to guarantee peaceful and credible elections.
