Police have reminded the public to seek clearance from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) before holding any demonstrations, following the arrest of nine students from Kyambogo University earlier today.
The students, three females and six males were apprehended near Lugogo Bypass in Kampala’s Nakawa Division for allegedly participating in an unlawful demonstration.
According to police, the group was protesting against KCB Bank’s alleged involvement in financing the crude oil pipeline project from Kikuube in Uganda to Tanzania.
The students cited human rights violations and environmental concerns linked to the project.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed that the students are currently detained at Kira Road Police Station and are awaiting prosecution.
