Parliament congratulates Pope Leo XIV, pays tribute to late Pope Francis

Parliament has officially extended its congratulations to the Catholic Church and to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, the newly elected Pontiff.

Following the passing of Pope Francis on April 21, the College of Cardinals comprising 133 electors successfully elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old American from Chicago, as the 267th successor to the papacy.

Upon his election on May 8, he assumed the papal name Pope Leo XIV, taking on leadership of the 1.4 billion-strong global Catholic community.

In a special sitting held this afternoon, the Parliament of Uganda paid tribute to the late Pope Francis.

The House described him as a global symbol of humility, peace, and compassion an influential leader who inspired millions across religious and political boundaries.

The tribute was led by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robina Nabbanja, who moved a motion in honor of Pope Francis’ life and legacy.

The motion received unanimous support from all Members of Parliament.

Presiding over the session, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among, expressed heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community and the Holy See.

She acknowledged Pope Francis’ pivotal role in promoting interfaith dialogue and offering moral guidance to the world.

As a gesture of goodwill and hope for continuity within the global Church, the House extended its congratulations to Pope Leo XIV upon his assumption of the papacy.
