As the 3rd of June approaches, marking Uganda Martyrs Day at Namugongo, the Catholic Diocese of Lugazi has announced that all preparations are in place to ensure a memorable and safe celebration.

The diocese, along with the organizing committee, is committed to making this year’s event both spiritual and vibrant.

Addressing the media at Lugazi Cathedral, the Vicar General, Msgr. Dr. Richard Kayondo, outlined the planned activities and the schedule leading up to the main day.

He emphasized that the pilgrimage will kick off with school-going children on 30th May 2025, who will journey to the Catholic Shrine at Namugongo.

This early pilgrimage aims to facilitate prayer and ensure the safety of young participants by reducing congestion on the main day.

The traditional walk of faith from Munyonyo Minor Basilica to St. Matia Mulumba Old Kampala Parish is scheduled for Saturday, 31st May 2025.

This spiritual procession allows believers to prepare their hearts for the upcoming celebrations.

The climax of the festivities will be the triumphal entry into Namugongo on 1st June at 5 pm, where foot pilgrims from the 33 parishes of Lugazi Diocese are expected to arrive.

These pilgrims will join for a Mass at the shrine, commemorating the martyrs’ sacrifice.

Msgr. Kayondo also revealed that, for security reasons, all pilgrims participating in the pilgrimage are required to register with the diocese.

Financially, the diocese has managed to raise half of the total budget needed for the celebrations, though the full amount has not yet been disclosed.

The theme for this year’s Uganda Martyrs Day is “LORD, LET ME SEE AGAIN” (Mark 10:51), inspiring reflection and spiritual renewal among the faithful.

It is noteworthy that significant Lugazi Diocese last organized and animated theeturn aNamugongo Martyrs Day celebrations 23 years ago, making this r occasion for the local Catholic community.

With all these preparations underway, the diocese is optimistic that this year’s celebration will be a meaningful and colorful tribute to the Uganda Martyrs, inspiring thousands to renew their faith and commitment.
