Ambassador Jan Sadek, Head of the European Union Delegation to Uganda, has called on all political stakeholders in Uganda to uphold the principles of democracy as the country prepares for the 2026 general elections.
Speaking during a meeting with leaders of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Sadek stressed the importance of promoting democratic values and ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
He emphasized that adherence to these principles is vital for the stability and legitimacy of the upcoming elections.
In response, NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, welcomed the EU’s continued concern over democracy and peace in Uganda.
However, he challenged the EU to take concrete actions to address human rights violations and to hold the government accountable, urging the international body to go beyond statements and support tangible reforms that guarantee a free and fair election.
The meeting underscored growing international attention on Uganda’s political climate as the country heads into a pivotal electoral period.
