In Luuka District, the police have detained one of their officers following the shooting death of a 30-year-old man, Swaliki Lwayanga, during the NRM village elections.
Lwayanga, a resident of Bulanga Central Cell in Bulanga town council, was shot on Wednesday by police officer Dennis Emojong.
According to reports, Lwayanga was participating in the NRM structure elections held at Noor Islamic Primary Teacher’s College playground in Luswiga zone.
The situation reportedly became chaotic as youths began pelting stones at election officials, prompting police to respond with live ammunition in an attempt to restore order.
The Busoga North police spokesperson, Michael Kasadha, explained that after the initial warning shots, the chaos persisted for about 30 minutes, with angry youths attempting to confront the security personnel.
In an effort to disperse the crowd, police fired live rounds at a lower range, resulting in the instant death of Lwayanga and injuring two others.
The incident has sparked concern over the use of live ammunition during election-related disturbances, and authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the police officer’s actions.
