Cardinals in Rome focus on evangelization, unity ahead of Conclave

The eighth General Congregation in the Vatican centered on themes such as evangelization, fraternity, synodality, and unity, emphasizing their significance for the Church’s mission.

Over 180 cardinals participated, including more than 120 electors, as preparations for the upcoming conclave progressed.

The conclave is scheduled to commence on the evening of May 7th, with 133 cardinals expected to participate in electing Pope Francis’ successor.

During the meeting, 25 speeches addressed key issues, notably focusing on evangelization as the core of Pope Francis’ papacy, the Church’s identity as a fraternal community committed to sharing the Gospel, and the importance of effective communication, especially toward young people.

The discussions also highlighted the plight and witness of the Churches of the East and explored ways to improve Gospel communication across all levels, from local parishes to the Roman Curia.

This Friday marked the seventh day of the novena that leads up to the conclave, reflecting the ongoing preparation for this pivotal ecclesiastical event.
