The Catholic community in Uganda is united in mourning the loss of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 following a stroke and heart failure.
His death has prompted a wave of collective sorrow among the faithful, as many reflect on the profound impact he had during his papacy.
In response to this tragic news, various parishes across the country are hosting Requiem masses, creating spaces for prayer and remembrance.
The Uganda Episcopal Conference, which represents the Catholic Bishops in Uganda, has organized a special requiem mass dedicated to Pope Francis on April 25, 2025, at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Lubaga.
Rt. Rev. Bishop Joseph Antony Zziwa, the Chairman of the conference, has invited clergy, religious figures, and laypeople to gather at noon to honor the beloved pontiff and celebrate his enduring legacy.
The Masaka Diocese also participated in this collective mourning by holding a requiem mass on April 24 at Kitovu Cathedral, led by Rt. Rev. Bishop Serverus Jjumba.
This event provided yet another opportunity for the faithful to pay their respects and reflect on the teachings of Pope Francis.
The Uganda Law Society (ULS) joined the outpouring of tributes by organizing a requiem mass at its headquarters in Kololo.
This solemn event was presided over by Bishop Emeritus Guiseppe Filippi, the Chairman of the ULS Board of Advisors, with Vice President Jessica Alupo attending as the guest of honor.
ULS President Isaac Ssemakadde participated virtually, demonstrating the widespread support and unity present during this time of mourning.
Pope Francis’s passing, occurring on Easter Monday, has left a significant void for many. His message of compassion, love, and unity resonated deeply within the Catholic community and beyond.
As the faithful in Uganda gather to honor his legacy, they are reminded of his teachings and are inspired to continue fostering a spirit of love and solidarity within their communities.
In this moment of grief, the Ugandan faithful come together not only to mourn a leader but also to celebrate a legacy that emphasized compassion, hope, and a call to serve others.
Through prayer and reflection, they aim to reinforce their commitments to the principles that Pope Francis championed during his papacy.
