Govt Hasn’t Paid for Buyala ‘Garbage’ Land – Minister Kyofatogabye

The Government has revealed that it is yet to pay for the contested land in Buyala along Kampala Mityana road where they want to put a new landfill for Kampala city.

Recently, the Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Hajat Minsa Kabanda confirmed that the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) had purchased land in Buyala as their landfill and within few weeks the National Forestry Authority (NFA) rejected KCCA’s plan of dumping garbage in Buto-Buvuma Central Forest land in Buyala, saying that it belongs to them and it shouldn’t be used since it will be endangering the environment.

Now according to the State Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Kabuye Kyofatogabye, they are still holding engagements spearheaded by the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to see whether they purchase another piece of land until NFA sorts its queries on the land with the owner.

He however failed to disclose where the Government is going to dump the over 25,000 tonnes of garbage collected within Kampala daily.

The waste management issues in Kampala worsened following the collapse of the Kiteezi land fill on August 10th 2024 which left 35 people dead and dozens other injured and in great loss of their property.
