The acting President of the People’s Front for Transition (PFF) group, Erias Lukwago has revealed that Dr. Kizza Besigye’s life is in great danger in Luzira prison where he is on remand.
Currently, Besigye and his colleague Haji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya are on remand on three counts including plans to overthrow the Government and possession of firearms following their arrest last year in neighboring Kenya.
While addressing the media at the PFF offices at Katonga Road in Kampala, Lukwago who is also the suspects’ lawyer noted that Besigye is under solitary confinement, he is not allowed to see his family, friends and fellow inmates.
Lukwago said prison authorities have also prohibited his people from taking him food, advising them to let him eat the prison canteen food.
He however noted that this is a violation of pre-trial rights thus vowing that PFF will defy this by continuing to take him food.
Meanwhile, the Uganda Prisons Services has refuted accusations on social media that they denied Dr. Besigye access to food.
Frank Baine, the Prisons Spokesperson while addressing a news conference on Monday at the Police headquarters Naguru, Kampala, noted that they manage Dr. Besigye according to the Prisons Act and the Standing Orders which guide the feeding of all prisoners.
