Gov’t to Reconstruct 15 Markets within the Kampala Metropolitan Area

Government has confirmed plans to reconstruct over 15 markets in Kampala due to their infrastructures being dilapidated and a danger to those working in them.

This has been disclosed by the William Epiaka, the Deputy Director Strategy Management and Business Development under the Ministry of Kampala saying that all the markets to be reconstructed are within the five divisions that make up Kampala city which include; Rubaga, Nakawa, Makindye, Central and Kawempe.

Epiaka said that this arrangement is under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA) Project that is ongoing and the works of reconstructing the markets is expected to kick off soon.

Among the markets to be reconstructed is; Nakasero, St. Balikuddembe commonly known as Owino, Nakawa, Kitintale, Gaba, Namuwongo 1 and 2 markets among others.

Epiaka explains that following President Yoweri Museveni’s directive to the Government to take over these markets, many of their structures were found in an unpleasant state.
