Government is to launch a soil institute named; Uganda Soil Institute (USI) aimed at guiding the public on soil usage in the country.
This is a milestone as the country joins the rest of the world on Thursday to commemorate the World Soil Day under the theme; “Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor and Manage” and celebrations will be held in Arapai, Soroti district in Eastern Uganda.
The Minister of State for Animal Industry, Bright Rwamirama has told the media in Kampala that the public is still ignorant about the importance of soil hence the reason why the Government agreed to establish an Institute to help sensitize Ugandans on soil usage and protection for future and more better production yields.
He has disclosed that globally, a third of soil resources are degraded with an annual loss of 750 billion metric tons of soil and 820 million people worldwide are food insecure, hence the need to address this problem because soil is wealth for national growth and development as well as livelihood.
