Buganda Caucus MPs Lash-out at Speaker Among over Coffee Bill

Speaker-Anita-Among

The Buganda Parliamentary Caucus has strongly condemned the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among’s statements during the debate on the Coffee Bill which they say were bordering on promoting tribalism.

The controversy erupted during the vote on the bill pushing for the merger of the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries where the Speaker is said to have uttered statements against the Baganda people in relation to the bill which angered the Buganda Caucus MPs.

Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, the Butambala County MP (NUP) and Chairperson of the Caucus while addressing journalists at Parliament on Friday expressed concern that the Speaker’s statement implies that the bill aims to economically cripple coffee growing in the Buganda Region.

The Caucus demands that Among withdraws her statement before they issue further political demands by Tuesday next week.

Similarly, the Caucus has also applauded MPs from both the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and opposition parties for rejecting the UCDA merger, despite the challenges faced.
