General Court Martial Postpones Sentencing of Lyavaala, Walusansa to November 4

Hamza Lyavaala

The General Court Martial in Makindye, chaired by Brigadier Richard Tukacungurwa, has postponed the sentencing of Hamza Lyavaala and Adil Walusansa to November 4, 2026, following the absence of some members of the court.

The two accused are facing two counts of murder arising from the deaths of two women and a boda boda rider in separate incidents in Kampala.

The victims were identified as Sawuya Azatu, who was shot dead in Kalerwe, and Sumaya Byaruhanga, who died in a bomb explosion alongside a boda boda rider at Munyonyo on June 3, 2025.

During the previous court proceedings, Lyavaala and Walusansa maintained their earlier guilty pleas, paving the way for the court to proceed to the sentencing stage.

However, the absence of some members of the military court prevented the scheduled sentencing from taking place, prompting the adjournment.

The matter is now expected to return before the General Court Martial on November 4, 2026, when the court is expected to proceed with sentencing.

The postponement means the two accused will have to wait until the next scheduled sitting for the court to determine their sentences.
