MPs Fault Government Over Lack of Solutions to Economic Crisis

Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development Henry Musasizi

A section of Members of Parliament has criticised the government’s approach to addressing Uganda’s current economic challenges, arguing that proposed interventions remain insufficient to ease the financial burden on citizens.

The criticism follows a report presented yesterday by Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development Henry Musasizi on the state of the economy, which the legislators say failed to outline concrete measures to address the challenges facing the country.

Led by Ntungamo Municipality MP Gerald Karuhanga, the MPs expressed disappointment with the government’s response, saying many Ugandans continue to struggle with the rising cost of living and difficulties in meeting their basic needs.

The legislators have proposed several measures they believe could help mitigate the economic crisis.

These include extending tax cuts, particularly on fuel, to reduce costs for consumers and businesses, as well as increasing investment in domestic production to boost exports and foreign exchange earnings.

They have also called for consideration of using part of the country’s foreign exchange reserves to support interventions aimed at addressing the economic challenges.

Meanwhile, Gilbert Oulanya Kilak South County legislature has urged Cabinet to reconsider its position on the crisis and avoid insisting that little can be done to improve the situation.

Oulanya warned that continued inaction could deepen public frustration, cautioning that Ugandans facing mounting economic hardships may eventually resort to taking matters into their own hands as they struggle to survive.

The MPs are calling for more decisive government action, arguing that practical and targeted interventions are needed to ease the pressure on households and businesses.
