Namyalo Calls for Forensic Audit of UEDCL Over Persistent Power Outages

Hajjati Hadijah Namyalo

The Office of the National Chairman, headed by Hajjati Hadijah Namyalo, has called on Parliament to conduct a forensic audit of the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) over persistent power outages affecting businesses and households across the country.

Since UEDCL took over electricity distribution from UMEME on April 1, 2025, consumers in different parts of Uganda have continued to report frequent blackouts, raising concerns about the reliability of electricity supply.

UEDCL Managing Director Joselyn Rwabwongo has attributed the outages to ageing infrastructure, vandalism and years of underinvestment in the electricity distribution network.

The government has since injected Shs477 billion to support efforts to improve the electricity grid, but power interruptions have persisted.

Speaking in Kampala, Namyalo said the continued blackouts were hurting businesses, undermining economic activity and threatening President Yoweri Museveni’s legacy.

She also raised concerns that the persistent outages could be the result of deliberate sabotage, although the allegation was not independently established.

Namyalo faulted officials she accused of misleading the President into terminating UMEME’s concession, alleging that some had acted out of personal interests rather than the country’s needs.

She further called for the arrest of some UEDCL officials, questioning their capacity to manage electricity distribution effectively.

Namyalo’s remarks add to growing public scrutiny of UEDCL’s performance as consumers continue to demand a more reliable electricity supply and accountability for the persistent outages.
