The Katikiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged the Government to avoid using force to compel citizens to participate in the National Cleaning Day held on the last Saturday of every month.
Mayiga made the remarks as Buganda marked its 64th Independence Day celebrations and the “Bulungibwansi ne Gavumenti z’Ebitundu” campaign at Kyadondo County Headquarters in Gombe Division, Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District.
The celebrations were held under the theme “Bulungibwansi ne Gavumenti z’Ebitundu,” which is in line with a directive by the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, aimed at promoting sanitation and cleanliness among the people of Buganda.
Mayiga said efforts to improve sanitation in communities should be driven by voluntary participation and a sense of community responsibility rather than coercion.
He also called on Ugandans to prioritise personal hygiene before turning their attention to cleaning their surroundings, noting that maintaining a clean environment begins with individual responsibility.
Buganda Kingdom was granted independence from the British colonial government under an agreement signed at Bulange Mengo on October 8, 1962.
