DP Urges Government to Strengthen Anti-Corruption Institutions and Protect Whistleblowers

DP spokesperson Okoler Opio Lo Amanu

The Opposition Democratic Party (DP) has challenged government to strengthen and adequately facilitate institutions mandated to fight corruption and protect whistleblowers, saying this is essential to promoting accountability, safeguarding public resources and driving national development.

The call follows recent police operations in Kampala, during which 14 suspects were arrested following a raid on a garage and washing bay in Kibuli over allegations of siphoning fuel from government and military vehicles.

Addressing journalists at the party headquarters in Mengo along Balintuma Road, DP spokesperson Okoler Opio Lo Amanu said that although government has established several institutions to combat corruption, many remain inadequately facilitated to effectively execute their mandates.

Opio commended Minister Balam Barugahare for taking the lead in the fight against corruption, urging other government ministries and agencies to join the efforts to protect taxpayers’ money and promote accountability in public service.

He also called for comprehensive investigations into the alleged fuel siphoning racket in Kibuli, insisting that all individuals implicated in the scheme should be held accountable in accordance with the law.

On a separate political development, Opio welcomed reports that General Salim Saleh had called for opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye to be taken to hospital, as well as his appeal for dialogue to address political differences.

He described the reported intervention and call for dialogue as positive steps towards promoting peace, reconciliation and political understanding in the country.

Opio maintained that dialogue remains an important avenue for addressing Uganda’s challenges, resolving political disagreements and fostering national unity.
