Uganda Airlines will launch flights between Entebbe and Accra, Ghana, next Tuesday, ahead of the planned introduction of the Entebbe–Kigali route, as the national carrier moves to expand its regional network and strengthen trade and tourism links across Africa.
The two routes are expected to increase the airline’s network to 19 destinations across Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe, including London Gatwick, serving short-, medium- and long-haul markets.
Although marketed as direct flights, the Entebbe–Accra service will include a stopover in Lagos, Nigeria. According to Uganda Airlines, the route will be operated four times a week using the same Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
The airline has advertised a promotional return fare of 550 US dollars, equivalent to approximately Shs 2.3 million, offering passengers another option for travelling between Uganda and Ghana.
Currently, Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines serve the route through their respective hubs in Nairobi and Addis Ababa, often increasing journey times for passengers travelling between the two countries.
Return fares on Ethiopian Airlines range from Shs 2.2 million to Shs 3.3 million, while Kenya Airways charges between Shs 2.4 million and Shs 3.8 million, depending on demand and how far in advance tickets are booked.
Despite the currently limited direct economic ties between Uganda and Ghana, Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama says improved air connectivity between East and West Africa could unlock new opportunities for trade and investment, particularly under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Byamukama explained that Uganda Airlines intends to position Entebbe as a connecting hub for passengers travelling from West Africa to other destinations, including India, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania.
The new routes form part of the airline’s broader expansion strategy, valued at Shs 3.7 trillion, which includes strengthening its regional network and expanding its fleet.
